This is probably a matter of opinion. With my first couple of characters I played presear almost, if not 100%, completely out and left presear at level 6-7.

On the other hand I've had some special purpose characters that I was in a hurry to develop (*cough* farmer. runner. *cough*). I rushed them out of presear at about level 2-3 having stayed long enough to pick up the basic skills from presear (which is not entirely necessary).

From my experience the game adjusts its difficulty to your current level, so my level 2's didn't have much more of a hard time in postsear ascalon than my level 6's, though higher was better overall depending on char class.

Probably the most beneficial thing to do is get your char some postsear ascalon or otherwise armor as soon as possible, even though you'll toss it by the time you get further in and need better.

I do every quest that can net me skills so i dont have to buy them when i cross over into post. Then do quests that can give me exp and items until i get to around lvl 7. I usually cross then, but depended on the char. my warrior crossed over at lvl 4, my ele crossed at lvl 8.......

as far as you want; and if you got a friend who can solo hydras outside augury rock; easy power leveling so you get accpeted in the ascention missions.
Dont forget the cheap scrolls of XP... always helps when your a low level.

Okay, now last question, is it faster to grind solo in pre-searing or just do my quests?

in pre searing - do the quests until you dont haev any left as they give you more exp than killing almost any monsters except the charr.

in post searing i do only the skill quests and then go buy a couple 200g xp scrolls from the trader and go kill grawl for a little bit from Port Sledge

I think the new trend is to try to get to lvl 20 in presearing. j/k XD
I usually go at lvl 7-8. I do all the quests, but don't collect reward till the last minute, except my secondary prof quests.

if your not already with a 2ndary; go down to the ice area and do the ele test but dont accept reward; and do it over and over; easy xp when you low level; 12 lv 1's and they ALL die with a lv 0 firestorm.

Do all or almost all the quests before you leave. One quest gives a skill point which are useful later on. And get all the skills you can get in presear. By that time you are usually around level 6+

*if* you are going for a high level, don't do the quests other than skill quests untill you are level 8. Sure itll take a while, but if you then do all the quests you can, you should pop up to level 10! the amount of exp for kills goes down as you level up. the amount of exp for quests does not change! This is just for those who want a high level before leaving pre. Otherwise its a waste of time, since you can get to 7-8 pretty easy in pre, then go post and get more levels much faster.
